Take Chris – a retired but youthful 62-year-old.

Chris is one of my most long-term students and in many ways my hardest to teach.

Many moons ago, Chris excitedly started to learn guitar with his daughter at an evening class.

He was super excited to learn with her at first, but whereas she made fast progress…

For him, things didn’t go so smoothly and although he made a good start, his playing quickly stalled.

Each week felt he was going backwards and even though he watched lesson after lesson on YouTube…

He still struggled with the “big 7 stumbling blocks” of beginner guitar playing. 

Thigns such as slow chord changes, poor strumming, buzzing barre chords, sore fingers, were crushing his spirit and will to keep going.

“Am I too old to learn!”, he often thought.

Chris picked up the “Batphone” (as I jokingly call it), and booked a lesson with me.

At this time I was fairly new to teaching guitar but…

I quickly learnt that Chris, like many others to follow him, needed a focused, step-by-step and confidence-building plan.

After many hours researching and refining lessons, we had little breakthrough after little breakthrough.

Eventually, he gained the confidence and the skills to play to a high standard.

I still teach Chris now and although he had to battle harder than most, if you saw him today, you may think he has played his whole life and is a “natural”.

You can see the joy in his eyes as he confidently fingerpicks Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, jams the blues, plays Clapton’s finest stuff and can pick up songs quickly.
