How To Jam One Chord Progression In Six Fun Ways!
Introduction and Playthrough
In this lesson we are going to take a really simple chord progression and play it in six exciting and very varied ways. This will help you improve your chord clarity, chord changes, and ability to play in various styles and have a tonne of fun. Watch the short intro before you begin…
Playing The Chords And Tips On Changing Between Them!
Before we begin the six exciting styles of playing the chord progression, let’s discuss a few tips and tricks on playing the chords cleanly and making the changes smoother and faster…
#1 – 50s Style Pop Strumming
Our first example is a fun little one that sounds very upbeat and old school.
- Get the TAB/Notation for this lesson
- This lesson uses the Ultimate Strum pattern which you can find out more about HERE.
#2 – Punk/Pop/Rock Strumming
Let’s rock out a little with this example! Notice how our fretting hand doesn’t need to do anything different. The change in tone and flavour is all in the strumming hand. You might not use this example all the time but it’s fun, especially if you like rock and you play electric as well as acoustic!
#3 – Ballad Fingerpicking in 6/8
In this example we are playing something many of you are more familiar with.
- Get the TAB/Notation for this lesson
- This video uses a 6/8 fingerpicking pattern called the “Going Up” pattern. Here is a free lesson from the Fingerstyle 101 video course where you can learn this in more detail. Go HERE.
#4 – The Blues Shuffle!
Now then, let’s play some fun blues. It’s the blues shuffle which is a sound everyone knows (and most people love). Take your time with this. It is not easy at first (but it does get easier).

- For more help with the blues shuffle, head HERE.
#5 – Slick Strumming
Now then, things are getting more sophisticated and trickier, but this example sounds very cool. It is essentially a two bar pattern on each chord. The first bar uses the Modern Strum pattern and the second bar uses some nice embellishments unique to this example. Go very slowly with this example.
- Get the TAB/Notation for this lesson
- Learn how to play the Modern Strum pattern HERE.
#6 – Embellished Fingerpicking
Our final example is not easy at all. In fact, there is a lot going on, but let’s finish with a bang. Here, we have hammer-ons, pull-offs, various rhythms, triads, and more. It is key you break each bar up into small chunks (as mentioned in the video), and you take your time!
A Summary Of This Fun Lesson
So there you go. That is the lesson where we take one simple chord progression using the chords of A-D-E and we play some really fun and exciting stuff with them. Of course, don’t try to learn all the examples at once (unless you are very experienced). Instead, take your time, choose one and enjoy!

Great lesson Dan!! Having a lot of fun with it so far! I’ve just done the first three techniques so far; working on smoothing out my chord changes and finger picking.
Super stuff, Denise. Pleased to hear it! Fun is what it’s all about and of course, smoothing out your changes and fingerpicking helps to have even more fun. Keep up the great work! 🙂
Brilliant lesson, I am amazed at all the different ways 3 chords can sound. I will be busy this month practicing these,I even had a try the last one but very very slowly as it is a bit advanced for me but nice to have a try. Thanks Dan
Thanks Joanne. Yeah, it is amazing just what we can do with three chords. There are even more ideas and styles I was thinking of showing, but of course, didn’t want to overwhelm any of you (maybe I will do a sequel lesson). Yeah, definitely worth trying the trickier ones for fun, and of course, keep coming back to them. 🙂
We guitarists are fortunate because we play the most versatile of all instruments! Jazz, funk, pop, folk ( yes, I’m an old folkie, not an old fogey 😜) rock, classical and too many to name.
I have loved the guitar my whole life.
Eventually, I will play better. 🤗
You will for sure, and keep thinking about the wonderful possibilities the guitar has to offer. All the sounds and styles are indeed exciting! That is highly motivating. Most of all, keep enjoying each session! 🙂
Going to be a busy month and I’m still going back to the previous 2 months!
Great August lessons. Just what I needed and some tricky stuff. Will take time to get some of it up to snuff.
Glad to hear it. Hope you have lots of fun and you have a wonderful August! 🙂
Great stuff. Interesting to see how much difference strumming makes to the sound that comes out of the guitar. Almost like different instruments.
That’s a great shout. That’s one thing people don’t really mention enough – just how versatile and unique the guitar is! 🙂
Great lesson. Lots of fun here.
Thanks, glad you’re enjoying it already! 🙂
loving the blues shuffle and the slick strumming, in fact like them all. last one a bit trickier. going to be a busy month.
Good stuff, yeah, the last one is hard for sure. That’s why I wanted to add some variety and various versions for different skill levels. Keep coming back to the harder ones though! 🙂
wow spoiled for choice here, not sure yet which i like best.
Glad to hear it! Lots of fun to be had here for you I hope. 🙂
Ignore my last Dan, cracked it now 🤠
