Cheers, Angie. Glad to hear you like the lesson. Keep coming back to it too. π

Hi, everyone. I wanted to start us off with a comment to get the ball rolling. I would LOVE it if you could leave a short comment introducing yourself to the other members. ο»ΏIβm Dan Thorpe, from Birmingham, UK (not Alabama!). I love fingerpicking – Paul Simon, James Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel and about a gazillion others! My favourite thing about playing guitar is having some quiet time to play for myself (music is a great outlet for everything in life) and to jam with my 4 year old boy, Archie! I used to be terrible at guitar but after years… Read more »

Hey everyone, I would love to know what lessons you would like to learn. More on fingerpicking, Travis picking, chord changes, theory, jamming???… you name it, leave your ideas below!! This is the place to do so.
Hi Dan, I am an intermediate player, but am fascinated about finger style, and very anxious to get started. But i must admit i do struggle a bit with the dreaded Barr Chords, but am improving a bit. I am a Viet Nam vet, who suffers from PTSD, I am very private, so if you don’t hear much from me please understand. Thanks
Steve
Hi Steve, thanks for getting in touch. It`s great to have you here. Barre chords are tough but do make sure you take your time and use good technique with them.
No problem at all regarding being private and I hope you are doing well regarding the PTSD. Just know that the comments section and the mini-forum is there for you when needed. All the best.
Cool, for sure, let us know some more details. What sort of slaps and slides? The crazy stuff or solid on beats 2 and 4 type thing? What sort of guitarists have inspired this? (I ask, so I know I’m on the right path). π
No particular artist comes to mind but I would say on beats 2 and 4 nothing crazy (yet). Slapping all the strings I find okay, it’s the thumb slap I have trouble with on the low E A strings.
I have come across slaps in the odd piece of music, done right sounds amazing. Just something I would like to add to my repertoire.
Ah, okay cool, thanks for letting me know. The slaps on beats 2 and 4 are very cool. The grooves these can add are great. Will get something ready on this. π

I studied classical guitar what seems like a lifetime ago. Now I want to get out my Shearer tutor book.
Thought the pinky was annularius. Maybe thatβs the Latin or I could be all wet and remembering it wrong.
Makes me think of the Spanish Romanza piece in fingerstyle 101.
People come and go in my life but I always have my guitar.

Another one that’s ‘comfortably doable’ & lots of fun is “… “Neon City Blues” from the Soulful Songbook. I think I might have to do the Blues Course soon Dan. Thanks again!!!

I can agree 100 percent with Tom… so much fun & have nailed it pretty well. Am enjoying playing these blues pieces more than I ever knew I would. The others Im loving are, Steel Mills Blues, & Back Porch Blues… still working on the last three bars of Minor King Blues. Great fun, thanks Dan.

Love this baseline lesson Dan. Sounds great playing a couple of times on E and A, then repeating on A and G, then back again. However adding in the alternate high E notes is proving a real challenge! Still early days though π

Well done. Super start. I’ve added your name to the honours board now. Cheers! π

I’m Tom. I have played for awhile (poorly) and not enjoying. I have not done any fingerpicking and this course looked like fun. Because it is a different technique feels like a new beginning for me which is a good thing.
Hi Tom, great stuff. Delighted to hear it. Enjoy the course and keep us posted with how you get on. π

I used the step by step instructions from your book with videos to help posture and set up. It really helped. I had played with the guitar on the right leg before. Both helped as I felt that I was a bit off. I realized that the head stock was to low, the angle was < 45 degrees, guitar was away from me. Wouldn’t you know it that of course was easier and more comfortable to play. Sometimes with playing guitar I think that I make if more difficult than needs to be. (Which is why I am hear!)
Hi Tom, welcome aboard. Great work following the instructions and making the tweaks. The issues you mention are pretty common so don’t worry, it’s not just you. Delighted you have fixed them. Things will get that bit easier and more enjoyable now. π

Hi
Iβm Charlie. I signed up after taking Danβs 21 day boot camp. I donβt have a lot of experience so I have the benefit of approaching the academy with a beginnerβs mind. Dan has a rare gift as a teacher and Iβm very much looking forward to continuing to learn and grow as a guitar player. Excited to be here with all of you!
Hi Charlie, welcome to the Academy! Delighted to see you here and thanks for the kind words. Means a lot. Looking forward to hearing how you get on. Exciting times! π

Hey Dan – Did you create the tab for Scar Tissue when Susan C. mentioned it below about 2 years ago?
Thank you
Hi John, after research I found, the issue with this song and a few others, is the copyright issues of posting the tab. One thing you can do is get the blank tab here, and create your own from watching the video (this is a great thing to do and helps with memory), or you can use a site like Ultimate Guitar for the tabs of the pop songs like this. All my own arrangements on the site, of course, come with tab. Let us know if this makes sense. π

Hi Dan, A stupid question perhaps. I have just purchased your Collection and 101 course plus this one and what I can’t figure out is upon which leg are you resting the guitar? Thanks. Barry
Hi Barry, no worries. Good question. I sit with the guitar in the classical position. You’ll see more details on that in the Fingerstyle 101 course on this page HERE. Look for the “classical with a strap” video. It’s taught early on in the book version too. Let us know how you get on. π
That’s great to hear, Tom. Well done and delighted you are enjoying it. π

Hi Dan
Iβm Willie, 75, from Manchester England. Hearing impaired, which makes distinguishing some chord sounds difficult.. Been practising for a year, can do chord progressions but never feel Iβm playing anything musical and have yet to play a song!
This is my last chance saloon.
Hi Willie, welcome aboard. Glad you are here. Take your time with this and the songs on offer. Start with one song and use the skills you have already learnt to help. Do go through the 7-day course too to help improve the key areas in your playing. Looking forward to hearing how you get on. π

New material in each lesson always seems to be just above what I am capable of doing when the lesson starts, but by the end of the lesson Iβm able to play the material. A sign of a well calibrated course. Iβve found that – for me – it works better if I print the material, then figure out how to do the βnew stuffβ, then check it against the video lesson.
That’s really great to know. Just what I was aiming for with this course – to gently nudge you beyond what feels comfortable and then show you that you can do it. Sounds like you’ve done brilliantly with the materials, so well done to you! π
Hello Dan – Iβm Henry from Tampa, Florida – looking forward to improving my rhythm techniques and just having fun with the guitar. Love music and Iβm an amateur songwriter – hope to be able to put some music to my songs.
Yeah, it’s another way of helping you get the most out of your playing and what you already know. Glad you enjoyed it and keep up the great progress. π

Hi Dan. My name is Chris, Iβm 58 and I live just outside of Liverpool, England.
I tried learning guitar at school but the lessons clashed with sports lessons!! My dad tried to teach me at home but the strings hurt my fingers. Iβve had a guitar for years and since semi retirement Iβve dusted it down and decided to learn to play it. I hope to be able to play a couple of simple songs within the next the month, benefiting from the structure of your teaching.
Eventually, letβs rock or just roll for nowβ¦
Hi Chris, welcome aboard. Ah, I was the same as you. All sport at school, until I was 15 then got hooked on music! Sore fingers are common, but not needed. See Day 1 of the 7-day course for help on that. (Fingerstyle 101 covers that in more detail too). I hope you have lots of fun and let’s get you reaching your goal! Let us know how you get on. π

Hi, could you remind where I can find Spanish Romance being played by you on this site please?
Thanks, Paul
Hi Paul, you can access it here – https://eliteguitarist.net/7-day-bonus-romanza/. Cheers. π
Liked the bonus piece!
Glad to hear it. π
Loved the structure of this lesson. Three intros and one βrecycledβ verse.
Yeah, it’s a fun way to do it! Keep having fun. π
This makes improvising – combining different bits and pieces – easy and fun.
That’s great. Improvising is never easy at first, but when you have the right tools, it becomes fun! π
Like this. Donβt know why, but Travis picking is a higher level challenge than anything else so far.
It is difficult at first, especially if new to you. Keep it steady and build up the muscle memory. You’ll nail it π
Really enjoyed this variant of the minor scale.
Super stuff, yeah, one of my favourite ways to play it. π
The tips for hammer-ons and pull-offs saved weeks of trial and error.
That’s brill. A tricky bunch of skills but sounds like you’ve made great progress with them so far. π
The verbal time counting is helpful.
Definitely, counting out loud is a handy skill when learning anything. π
I loved this. Moody, reflective, and readily playable!
That’s great. Nice way to describe it too. π
The first metronome exercise I actually enjoyed!
Ha, yeah, metronome lessons can be so overwhelming they kick the fun right out of it. Glad you enjoyed this one. π
These βsmallβ tips and exercises are very helpful!
Super stuff, bitesize tips that work are always a good thing. π
This is challenging but fun. Iβm βprogrammingβ a new pattern between my brain and picking hand.
Yeah, that’s great. Getting it cemented in the brain is definitely a good thing. Do that and the fingers follow. π
Love the scale. Easy to learn and then nicely integrated into a catchy tune.
That’s ace. Pleased you found it easy to learn and enjoyable! π
The fundamentals are super helpful!
Great stuff, the fundamentals are key to everything. π
Thank you for putting this together. The best level of challenge and learning is perfect!
My pleasure, thanks for the comment and glad you’re enjoying it. π
This is a great course. Designed to keep students in the flow. Clarity of playing is a reflection of clarity of mind.
Great stuff, pleased you’re enjoying it. So true what you say about clarity of the mind. Keep up the great practice. π
Hi Dan,
This sounds great and if it delivers half of what you describe; Iβm really looking forward to unblocking some of the problems Iβm having.
